MACDONALD RESIDENCE,CHESTERFIELD, MO
SIMPLICITY AND RESTRAINT
2005

Two cubic volumes of steel, glass and stucco are connected by a bridge housing the main entry. The volumes and the bridge embrace the pool yard located 12 feet below. Lower level rooms surround the pool decks and frame the dramatic views to the southwest. Guests cross an exterior bridge from the arrival court to the front door set in the largely opaque northern facade. Once inside the views explode out from the Mountain.

The west building contains the main living gallery, the kitchen and dining pavilions and the master suite mezzanine with the music bridge, and the painting studio. The East building houses the children’s rooms and the guest suite. All principal spaces look to the central pool court and out to the views with large expanses of glass.

The design idea was to create a peacefully centered courtyard home that was private and inward looking while at the same time capturing the tremendous views from every space. We were striving to create a composition where the interplay between the volumes and levels was the only ornament needed to create an exciting environment. An absence of trim or decoration will allow nature and artwork to animate the spaces. There are very few interior partitions except as needed for privacy .

Elements like the kitchen are constructed as free standing millwork pavilions floating within the larger volume and detailed with simplicity and restraint. Millwork is made out of translucent or transparent acrylic, stainless steel, etched glass, veneered plywood and granite. Floors are polished concrete with inset areas of carpet.
